After the month had begun with a 5% surplus on the back of a wet July, the monsoon slipped into the negative zone on Friday with an overall deficit of 1% following a sustained dry spell in August that is likely to continue across most regions of the country for a few more days. Meanwhile, El Nino has strengthened from a "weak" to a "moderate" state and the latest update from US weather agencies late Thursday said there was a 66% chance of it developing into a "strong" event later this year.
