Depression non-disclosure no ground to reject claim: Panel

The NCDRC has ruled that non-disclosure of ailments like depression should not be a basis for denying insurance claims by LIC. The commission stated that LIC's medical literature did not classify depression as a serious ailment and there was no record indicating that depression could lead to heart failure. Anil Patel's family approached the Kheda district consumer forum, which mandated LIC to fulfil the insurance claims. LIC contested the forum's orders, but the Gujarat State Dispute Redressal Commission upheld the decision in 2019.
